will my school give me a loan if i only need it for living expenses?
i am a newly divorced single mom and i signed up for school for this fall. i live with a friend and i am currently not working. i get child support and help my friend out as much as possible. its still not much though. i applied for a grant and i got approved and they are paying for all my school and materials. i am only doing cosmetology so its one year. what i wanted to do though was ask for a loan of 10,000 to get me through this year on paying rent and other bills with my friend or atleast fimding my own place just in case it doesnt work out long with me living there. will the school still give me a loan for that even though the grant covered most all tution and fees and materials? or will they say no? i know i need to talk to a financial aid personnel, but thats a month from now and i am trying to get everything planned out so i dont come across any "surprises" or let-downs. any one had the same situation as me? a school loan for living expenses only? do they give it to you?
i know i could work, but there are some problems with that i dont want to discuss. basically alot going on in my life right now, and i want school to be my focus. i have a tendancy to get on "overload" and it stresses me out. esoecially if its; school, divorce, baby, paying friend, and work on my mind.
If the school accepts title IV funding (financial aid) and you haven't exceeded the cost of attendance in financial aid, then yes, you could receive a loan. However, the maximum an independent can borrow in federal loans is $9,500/year... and it's unlikely that your school would allow that much for living expenses. If they don't allow any money for living expenses (some schools don't), then you won't be eligible for any student loan money. You can use student loans for living expenses, but only if the school includes living expenses in their cost of attendance (and if they accept title IV funding).
I realize that you get overloaded quickly... but you really should be looking for work. If your friend kicks you out, will you and your child(ren) have a place to go, or are you going to end up in a homeless shelter? Most landlords will require a credit check and employment verification for you to rent... most will not simply allow you to use loan money (just something to be aware of). We have all had difficult times and will have many more difficult times in the future, but you just keep moving forward and doing what you have to in order to provide for your child(ren) and yourself. Good luck to you. Ask the school about student loans for living expenses. Only take out federal loans though... do not get yourself in trouble with private loans (odds are you will not qualify anyways, but they're trouble regardless).
